The 1958 Edsel: Newest Thing on Wheels

Released into a nation struggling with a weak economy and fears of the Soviet satellite flying high overhead, the Edsel rollout couldn't have had worse timing. Combined with an undersupplied dealership network, radical styling and overhyped publicity, the 1958 Edsel undeservedly became a symbol of failure that endures to this day.

	Phil McGuire recently made a trip back to Nevada to retrieve two of his Edsels that were left behind when he relocated to Indiana.
	The Citation has been sold and the Corsair will be parted out.

	Michael Rice's lovely tri-tone Pacer hardtop sports a fresh paint job.
	The 1958 Pacer hardtop is by far one of the prettiest body styles. A tri-tone color combination just makes it all the nicer.

	The owner of this Pacer sedan, Jim D'Amore, was going to sell it until he and his wife were inspired by Michael Rice's four-door hardtop.
	Now he is going to restore it. The car was painted pink and white by its previous owner. The paint code was originally EEE.

	This fine '58 Corsair belongs to Thomas Korbay of Ingolstadt, Germany.
	Jonquil Yellow & Jet Black make for a terrific color combination.

	These are images from Andy Harbaugh of Medina, Ohio. This Ranger two-door hardtop was discovered in a yard in central Ohio.
	This is a Royal Blue Metallic and Powder Blue Pacer two-door hardtop from a junkyard in northwestern Ohio.
	Here's an aerial view of the same car. This must have been a beautiful Edsel in its day.
	This Ranger and Citation are in a junk yard in central Ohio. Andy bought some of the trim from the Ranger for his car.

	Fred Flinstone's car? Northeastern winters are not kind to cars, but Andy is getting prepared to do a full restoration. He already has the new floor sheetmetal.
	This E400 has an Autolite carburetor rather than a Holley. The Autolites are less prone to leakage by virtue of their housing.
	It's always an exciting day when you bring home an Edsel. Andy's '58 Ranger two-door sedan "Clyde" is seen here being transported to its new home.

	The driver's side. It seems strange how that surface rust doesn't go beyond the cowl. Dan Crossman's old Roundup donated new front fenders for Clyde.

	Don Neiman had this Citation for sale back in the mid-seventies. He was asking $500 for this very solid, totally loaded brown and pink beauty.

	Superb all-Driftwood Ranger sedan photographed in Buffalo, 1977. It was never seen again.

	This Roundup supplied parts for Rob Castle's Bermuda.
	This beauty was photographed around 20 years ago in a junkyard in Utica, NY. The owner wanted "thousands" for it. Bet it's still there.
	Here it is again.
	Bill Brzoza's uncle had this black Corsair. It had a red and gray interior. The previous owner had wrecked it and taken it off the road in the early '60s. The odometer showed 42k. The left front was hit.
	The only rust was on the hood, roof and trunk. Because it was stored outside, he had placed rubber and plastic mats on top to protect it. The photos don't show how serious this damage was—almost completely through!

	We drove it to Chuck Durphy's house, about 100 miles each way. The car ran fine.
	I prefer "dog dish" hubcaps. All of our Edsels have them.

	Phil McGuire in Nevada sent this shot of a '58 Villager he found. The desert has been kind to this car.
	One of my favorites, a triple-black Pacer two door hardtop, at the same meet, owned by Brian Martin.

	Here's a '58 Villager just out of the paint shop with a fresh coat of Ember Red & Snow White. They haven't replaced the stainless yet.

	R.D. Bradley had this lovely Pacer convertible there.
	Also in Branson was this 32,000-mile Citation hardtop recently located in Ames, Iowa. It now resides in Arkansas.
	This '58 Pacer two-door hardtop appeared in the Christie's Auction at the Rockefeller Plaza in New York, May, 2002.
	It looks like this car is pretty well equipped. We don't know the outcome of the bidding.
	June, 1972, Dave Sinclair's Pacer hardtop in Reno for the Harrah's show. This car came with dog dish hubcaps and two dash deletes but had the safety package which included seat belts, front and rear! It was a 40k original car.
	Castro Valley, CA, December, 2001, this turquoise Pacer hardtop has been in this spot for 30+ years! The owner was going to "fix it up" back in 1970 and still plans to do so today!

	A red Citation convertible parked on street about three blocks from David's Cincinnati home in 1976. The owner had just purchased the car for $500!

	This Pacer convertible belongs to Ray Schmidt of St. Cloud, Minnesota.
	Ray bought this car from Bob Schwartz in Ohio. Bob is the one who installed the Citation-style scallop moldings while restoring the car.

	David parked four lovely '58s in front of his house on September 4. Wonder if anyone knew the significance!?
	David bought his first '58 Edsel in 1976 when he was 15 years old. However his first Edsel was a '59 that he purchased a year before. This car is a Corsair that he bought from the original owner. It only had 40,000 miles on it. David owned the car until 1986.
	A Horizon Blue '58 Villager in a used car lot around 1982, Western Hills, Ohio. It was evenutally purchased by a fellow in Chicago and was frequently seen at Edsel meets in the early-to-mid-1980's.
	Jonquil Yellow Bermuda wagon in Dayton, 1980. It appeared to be an abandoned restoration project. Holes in fenders indicate that it once had a pair of spotlight mirrors. They were laying inside the car in the back.
	This is a Charcoal Brown Metallic Pacer four-door hardtop found in Norwood, Ohio in 1975. It was still owned by an elderly couple who bought it brand new. It had only 48,000 miles and was almost like new.
	This is the rear view of the same car. Note that it has the bumper guards and rocker mouldings, but no back-up lights or rear view. It also has has dog dish hubcaps with blackwalls.
	This Charcoal Brown Metallic Ranger hardtop had a green interior and lever automatic. It also had Pacer mouldings and skirts. It was being offered for sale in Cincinnati around 1976
	A bare bones black Ranger two-door sedan with stick shift and overdrive for sale in Owensville, Kentucky, 1980
	A really rusty Royal Blue Pacer sedan for sale at a gas station in northern Kentucky, 1977. It had power front seat. It was originally owned by a lady who received the car brand new as a high school graduation present.
	Here's a picture of a beautiful Ranger sedan, Spruce Green with Ice Green scallop. It belongs to Cory Reiber in Montana. He drove it to Utah for a car show in July.
	This coral Pacer two-door hardtop is for sale in Cox Creek, Kentucky. It has an unusual color scheme in that the body and scallop are coral while just the roof is white. No back-up lights, either.

	David went on a trip to Seattle where he met with Todd Fitch, a member of the Edsel mail group. He drove an Ice Green '58 Ranger two-door hardtop.

	Low mileage '58 Corsair, Burley, Idaho, 1993. It was a tri-tone with only 41,000 miles, and it drove like it too. A really nice car despite the spotlight, twin hooded mirrors and license plate placement.
	Currently for sale on a used car lot in Illinois is this Ranger two-door sedan with Teletouch. It has a single tone Sunset Coral body.
	The dealer wants 5,000 for it but it does have some floor rust.
